Artist Biography

Nature, landscape and geology are Monica’s primary sources of inspiration, informed by her interests in local and international travel and hill walking. With a background in multidisciplinary art, her practice presently focuses primarily on ceramics while drawing on experience across a range of media. She explores the relationship between material, time and process, using her distinctive ceramic ‘fabric’ to mirror, reimagine and accelerate the unfathomable timescales and transformative processes of geological formation.

Working in a conceptual and experimental manner, Monica allows materials and firing to have their own voice. Glazes become integral to the structure of each piece rather than surface decoration, resulting in unrepeatable, truly unique abstract sculptural works. Recent explorations examine the tension between the power of nature and humankind’s interaction with the natural world.

Alongside her studio practice, Monica is a well-established Artist educator, as well as a facilitator in collaborative and community-based art practices. Monica is a multi-award-winning graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design. Her work is held in both public and private collections, including Limerick School of Art and Design, Technological University of the Shannon, BD Research Centre Ireland and Ingenium Training and Consulting, and has been featured in print and online publications.
